NBA Stars Join Forces To Provide HBCU Students Transportation To The Polls

Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony's Social Change Fund have teamed up with Lyft and HBCU Heroes to help get students to the polls. The nonprofit coalition will offer transportation to polling sites for voters at Winston-Salem State, Florida A&M, Morehouse College, Hampton University and Prairie View A&M.

“HBCU students are the future leaders of our country. It is our honor to partner with HBCU Heroes and the Social Change Fund to ensure that these young voters can get to the polls with access to affordable transportation,” Lyft executive Anthony Foxx said.

Lyft is propelling this initiative through their LyftUp program. Thus far, they have teamed up with a number of organizations including More Than A Vote to provide discounted transportation to the polls for voters in Texas. HBCU Heroes is also working to make things happen on their end. The nonprofit works to provide funding for HBCU sports programs. Rounding out the trio, the Social Change Fund works to address critical issues including public safety and criminal justice reform. Initially, the fund was led by Wade, Paul and Anthony. Over the past few months, a number of NBA All-Stars have joined the movement including Milwaukee Bucks Forward Khris Middleton.

“My home state of South Carolina has a rich history of some of the finest HBCUs that have educated our community for generations. My grandparents, cousins, aunts and friends attended these colleges, and I’m excited to bring it full circle to help provide rides for students at South Carolina’s HBCUs to the polls this November,” Middleton said.

“Being able to support my community so they can exercise the rights that so many before us fought for us to have is an awesome feeling.”

With less than two weeks left until election day, transportation to the polls is more important now than ever.
