A Black university student in Virginia walked across the graduation stage last week, despite an accident taking away his ability to walk.

In 2024, Virginia Union University (VUU) student Jaiden Picot was struck by a truck while riding his e-scooter to work, according to WTVR

Despite this, he continued to pursue his education and work towards his MBA through a combination of hospitalizations, rehabilitation, and faith.

“I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me,” he said. “I had a goal before my accident that I wanted to do this, and like I said, I didn't let my accident stop me, so I worked hard, prayed, had faith, and I made it to here.”

He finally earned his Executive MBA on May 9, marking his second graduation at VUU after earning his bachelor's degree last year, per the outlet.

Picot was able to walk using a robotic exoskeleton suit, which he explains helps him lift his body "like a big transformer suit.” He called out both his mother and his girlfriend for supporting him through his recovery and academics, and told the outlet that his philosophy of being "one percent better every day” sustained him through the journey.

Picot reportedly plans to take a short break before pursuing a career in real estate with Keller Williams, the largest real estate franchise in the United States. He aims to help people with disabilities find accessible housing.

“I honestly just want to help people like me find affordable and accommodative homes that they will feel comfortable and happy to live in," he said. “Whatever you're going through, whatever you've been through, just don't let it hold you back, just have patience and fight through.

Picot’s family has started a GoFundMe to help him purchase an adaptive van, which, at the time of writing, has raised $610 toward the $63,000 goal.
