Barack Obama Endorses Keisha Lance Bottoms For Georgia Governor

Former President Barack Obama endorsed Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms for Georgia governor Thursday (October 8), urging Georgia voters to support the former Atlanta mayor less than a month before Election Day.

“This is Barack Obama, Georgia. I hope you'll support my friend Keisha Lance Bottoms for governor,” Obama said in a video shared to YouTube Thursday.

“As a former judge, council member, and mayor, Keisha believes that public service is about putting you first,” he continued. “She's invested in young people, delivered historic pay raises for police officers and firefighters, and balanced the budget without raising taxes.”

Obama also highlighted Bottoms’ campaign proposals, saying she has “a plan to lower costs, expand Medicaid, strengthen rural hospitals, and give communities the option to eliminate grocery taxes.”

“And as a mom of four, Keisha understands the importance of giving every child a strong start,” Obama said. “And that's why she'll work to guarantee pre-K for every four-year-old.”

The endorsement comes after Bottoms and Republican nominee Rick Jackson faced off in their first, and likely only, general-election debate on Tuesday (October 6). The candidates clashed over the economy, affordability, and President Donald Trump.

Bottoms criticized Jackson over his previous pledge to be “Trump's favorite governor.” Jackson, who received Trump’s endorsement in July, has also said he would be “like Trump, but with a Southern tone,” NBC News reported.

Bottoms is seeking to become the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history. Former president Joe Biden endorsed her in May, while Trump has backed Jackson, according to the Georgia Recorder.

Early voting begins Tuesday (October 13), and Election Day is November 3.

“There is a lot at stake in this election, Georgia,” Obama said. “Make your voice heard and vote for Keisha Lance Bottoms for governor.”
